My High School Best Friend
I had a Facebook memory come up of me asking people about doctors. Mine had left in late 2012 and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions. My former best friend Deanna recommended someone in Bay View and I went to that person for five years. I unfriended Deanna after I found out she voted for well, you know, that guy and was justifying why.
I was trying to think when we became close in school. It was maybe sophomore year in high school? We were both our own misfits and we spent a lot of time together at each other's houses. She was the one who accidentally got me and a mutual friend talking again. She was friends with my junior high ex-friend Derrick. Derrick was a dork and we lived in the same neighborhood. He said horrible things to my face about what an ugly nose I had and it looked like I had a banana for a nose. It just got to the point where I stopped talking to him because of the hurtful things he said. Deanna had a party at her house where nobody really showed up so we all wound up talking and having a good time.
It wasn't until our senior year that things got bad. Deanna was changing and not in a good way. She was going to a strange church that her mother was going to where they spoke tongues so religion was becoming more of a thing with her.
It was the wanting to start fights with people that got to me. Deanna wanted her brother to beat up someone who wanted to beat me up. Can you follow because I can't? I start dating college guy and he had also went out with another girl in my class. Vienna worked with us at Kohl's. She didn't talk to anyone. This all went down at the skating pond. I didn't know how to ice skate and well, maybe that was a good thing. College guy talked to Vienna and told her to knock it off with the foolish talk. Deanna wanted to terrorize her and I just didn't want to do that.
My parents or my dad had decided we were moving to Bay View in February and I was thinking about college and college guy. I didn't want to do these stupid girl fights. I was done being part of the Real Girls of South Milwaukee High. I wanted to move on.
I was still driving back to school after we moved. I think around that time Deanna and I stopped talking. She had wanted to start another fight with someone else and I told her that was enough. We had the same first period class and I would watch her stomp in and sit down behind me. I would stand at lunch and talk to other friends while she pulled out of the parking lot with her mom's limo and flip me off in front of everyone. Yeah. Where was Andy Cohen when this happened?
High school graduation happened and we didn't see each other until years later I saw her at a grocery store with a toddler in her cart. We were older and I thought wow. She has a kid. We made eye contact and she couldn't push her cart away from me fast enough. I thought ok. Someone is still mad but I get it. I didn't think saying hello would have been a bad thing but she wasn't having none of that.
It wasn't until Facebook that we reconnected. I think she might have sent the friend request and we did interact with each other a little bit. It didn't look like her son's father was around so she was a single mom and looked like she lost her mom years ago. I always did like her dad and was happy she spent a lot of time with him. I knew we didn't have a lot in common. She was constantly posting anti abortion posts and I thought well, good for her if she feels that way.
It wasn't until she was posting about why Trump was a good person in 2016 that I had enough. I thought we don't have anything in common and maybe it's best I move on. No harm. No foul. We're both different people.
I know, I'm alone and why wouldn't I reach out to her when we were so close in high school? I have a feeling it would be a friendship that wouldn't last. I think Deanna thrived on trouble and maybe still does. I was a little surprised when she picked up with someone during our high school years who was pretty promiscuous. Who did we know? She told us! Charlene told us stories about all of her sexual adventures and she was only 17. Deanna would be parked at a red light and Charlene would yell out the car window at a couple, FUCK HIM! I did! I kind of have an idea of what type of people Deanna still hangs out with and I don't think I'd fit in.
In Deanna's case, I wish her well but I think you can't go back to high school.
